Learning in Community
Understanding history isn’t a solitary endeavor. That’s why Modern US History includes weekly online classes led by curriculum developer Simit Patel, where students engage with the discussion questions presented in each section. With enrollment limited to just 12 students, these sessions create an intimate learning environment where every student can participate actively in thoughtful dialogue about the material.
These discussions offer structured conversations that teach students how to support arguments with evidence, consider alternative viewpoints, and refine their thinking through respectful debate. These skills of civil discourse and evidence-based reasoning are increasingly rare and increasingly valuable in our polarized public square.
Addressing Your Concerns as a Parent
We know that as a parent, you’re not just concerned about your child’s academic performance—you’re thinking about the kind of citizen and leader they’ll become. You see the challenges mounting in our world: political polarization, economic instability, erosion of civil liberties, and the difficulty of distinguishing truth from manipulation in our information ecosystem. You want your child to be equipped not just to succeed in this world but to help improve it.
Modern US History directly addresses these concerns by helping students understand the historical roots of our current challenges, through examining events like:
- The Iran-Contra scandal and questions of executive accountability
- The financial crisis of 2008 and its ongoing economic implications
- The surveillance apparatus revealed in the wake of 9/11
- The use of culture and media as tools of social control
- The ongoing struggle for voting rights and civil liberties
Students gain the historical context necessary to make sense of current events and the analytical tools to be informed, engaged citizens rather than passive subjects of forces they don’t understand.
In an era shaped by rapid change and competing narratives, Modern US History helps students build the historical awareness, critical-thinking skills, and intellectual maturity necessary to understand the world they live in—and their place in it.
