The events of September 11, 2001 forever changed the course of American history and global politics. In this unit study, students will explore the complex and often controversial aspects of 9/11 that continue to shape our world more than two decades later:
- How the official narrative of 9/11 has been questioned by whistleblowers and thousands of architects and engineers
- The unexplained collapse of World Trade Center Building 7, which wasn’t hit by a plane yet fell at near free-fall speed
- The intelligence failures and military exercises that preceded the attacks, including the Able Danger program that identified several hijackers well before 9/11
- The suspicious financial transactions that suggested foreknowledge of the attacks
- The geopolitical consequences that followed, including the “Forever Wars” that have led to much horrific violence
- The unprecedented expansion of government surveillance and security powers that fundamentally altered Americans’ civil liberties
This unit study provides students with the tools to critically evaluate evidence, understand multiple perspectives, and recognize how transformative events can be leveraged to reshape society and policy for decades to come.
