Simit P.KeymasterHello students! Use this discussion forum to ask questions about the COVID-19 unit study, and to practice refining your thoughts on the matter. Feel free to start your own thread. If you’re looking for something to think or write about, try one of the discussion questions below!
Discussion Questions
On Operation Warp Speed and Vaccine Development
1. Operation Warp Speed was primarily a military operation with military personnel vastly outnumbering civilian scientists. Why might this approach have been chosen?
2. The materials note that Operation Warp Speed allowed manufacturers to “proceed to the clinical stage without any prior toxicity studies in animals.” When, if ever, is it ethical to bypass established safety protocols? Who should make these decisions?
On COVID-19 Origins
1. How might understanding the true origin of COVID-19 affect how we prepare for and prevent future pandemics?
On Vaccine Safety and Reported Deaths
1. The materials present data suggesting significant numbers of deaths related to COVID-19 vaccines. How should we evaluate vaccine harm in relation to potential benefits of vaccination? What information would help you make a more informed assessment?
2. What responsibilities do governments, pharmaceutical companies, and medical professionals have when adverse effects occur from vaccines developed under emergency circumstances?
3. How should society balance individual risk assessment with collective public health needs during a pandemic?
On Lockdowns and Social Impact
1. How did your personal experience of lockdowns compare to what was described in the unit study? What factors might explain any differences?
On Global Health Governance and the WHO
1. The curriculum raises questions about WHO funding sources and potential conflicts of interest. How can international organizations maintain independence while receiving funding from various sources with their own interests?
2. What are the benefits and risks of centralizing global health responses under organizations like the WHO? How might the Pandemic Treaty described in the materials affect national sovereignty?
3. How, if at all, should democratic principles apply to global health decision-making? Who should have a voice in policies that affect the entire world?
On Pandemic Simulations and Preparedness
1. How should societies balance civil liberties with emergency powers during a health crisis? What safeguards could prevent abuse of emergency powers?
2. How might your generation approach pandemic preparedness differently based on lessons from COVID-19?
In addition to face-to-face conversations, remember that you can discuss these topics and more in our discussion forum for this unit study.
